On this day I was asked to be a student ambassador, and to give tours to families looking into Gilmour for future years. I spent the day with a family with three kids, one in eighth grade, and the other two in elementary school. While on the tour I learned a lot about the family and their interests as well as what they hoped to find at Gilmour. I learned that the girl I was giving the tour to also played soccer, I was sharing the tour with a senior who next year is going D1 so a lot of the tour was spent talking about that and going over that process. I learned that her and I have a lot of the same interests academically and in extra curricular activities.
Are the service hours you completed COMPETENCE HOURS (learning about social justice issues) or COURAGE HOURS (direct or indirect service to others)?
COURAGE
Which Gilmour charism (Divine Providence, Forgiveness, Hope, Hospitality, Inclusiveness, Option for the Poor, The Cross, Zeal) did you best live out through your service experience? Please explain.
Hospitality
I feel as though this service experience embodied the Charism of Hospitality. I believe this because the tour was meant to make the family feel welcome as well as apart of the Gilmour community. By the end of the tour they even mentioned that they thought that Gilmour would be a good fit for them. By making simple conversation, and including the family in various interactions, they felt as if they already were apart of the community. I believe this experience best embodies the charism of Hospitality, because I made them feel welcome in an unfamiliar enviorment.
Would you try this service experience again? Why or why not?
Yes. I would love to take part in this service experience again. I actually still talk to my tour guide from when I attended this exact open house as an eighth grader. I hope that next year I can have the same relationship with the girl I gave the tour to as I do with the one who gave mine. This experience overall was amazing, and even made me feel more like I belong at Gilmour, it helped me to feel more at home knowing that I now was given the responsibility to invite people, and I realized that I am no longer the visitor, I am now apart of the family.

Throughout the month of october I attended the immersion courses to learn about environmental struggles in west Virginia in addition to preparing for the immersion trip. During this class we read the immersion novel, and learned how to be respectful on immersion trips as well as learning how to walk with others in their struggles.

COMPETENCE
Which Gilmour charism (Divine Providence, Forgiveness, Hope, Hospitality, Inclusiveness, Option for the Poor, The Cross, Zeal) did you best live out through your service experience? Please explain.
The Gilmour Charisms which this experience that were best embodied through this experience was option for the poor and vulnerable and hospitality. I lived out the charism of option for the poor by learning about and educating myself on impacts of the opioid epidemic on Kermit and environmental damages of coal mining. This experience embodied hospitality because during this class we learned about how to be respectful of the situations of others, and walk with others during their struggles.
Would you try this service experience again? Why or why not?
I absolutely would do this class again. I loved west virginia, it truly is one of my best memories that I have at Gilmour. I loved our group and group leaders, it truly was an amazing impactful and enlightening experience.
